These magnetic blocks use a variety of skills including visual attention, hand-eye coordination and basic finger grasp. They are magnetic so they stay together which is great for kids with emerging fine motor skills and they won't fall apart if your car hits a bump in the road or turbulence in the air.

I am not sure exactly what these are called but I refer to them as electronic doodle pads. The are great because no paper or writing utensils are needed. I use them with stencils. Less mess than traditional coloring activities.

Foil crafts are super fun and come in several different themes for boys and girls. Kids like things that sparkle and these definitely do! Low mess and great for travel.

If you have older kids, the more "adult" sticker by number books offer some engaging mosaic patterns.

Dot art is great because it uses stickers which work on those pincher skills for prewriting. While I like the finger ink for a home or classroom activity, it would not be great for travel so just bring the stickers. Kids like the sparkly stickers in this book.
